CHAPTER 7
Juliet
âFor pityâs sake, Davisâcut the false modesty act.â
âFalse modesty? Iâm as humble as they come.â
Obviously I donât believe him; men as good-looking as Davis couldnât possibly be modest, could they? Iâve certainly never met a man who was even half this attractive who wasnât an arrogant prick.
Could Davis possess all the qualities of the perfect man as if he were created especially for me and dropped down in the middle of the woods?
Funny, kind, giving.
Tall, dark, handsome.
Stronger than strong.
Burly, even.
Even his five oâclock shadow is doing it for me in a big way and I normally donât go for stubble on a man; usually love a freshly shaved jawline given that Iâm anti-beard burn.
Ha!
Dream on, Juliet.
I have an idea. âHow about you describe yourself to me instead.â
His eyes dart to Thad and Mia, who have long given up on us as entertainment for the evening. In fact, I can hear them whispering about sneaking off, wondering if Iâll be fine here with Davis, so they can spend their last night screwing their brains out buck naked in the woods as God intended.
Oy vey.
âYou want me to tell you what Iâve got going on here?â He gestures up and down his own body, beer bottle in his large, strong hand.
âSure. Go for it.â
Heâs quiet a few moments as he gathers his thoughts. âAlright, well. Letâs seeâ¦who am I, who am Iâ¦â His head tilts back, resting on the back of the chair as he gazes up at the sky, avoiding direct eye contact. âOkay, If I were to build a profile on a dating site, this is what I might say to describe myself.â
I wait.
âTall, hardworking man who values family. Good communicator. Honest.â Davis pauses again to think, finally turning his face to look at me. âI live with intention.â
âYou live with intention? What does that even mean?â
âYes, I mean what I do, and do what I say Iâm going to do. I donât talk just to hear the sound of my own voice. Conflict isnât necessary and can be avoided. Iâ¦â He clears his throat. âWhen I say and do things, they are for a purpose. Iâm trying to make the world a better place. So what if my face cleans up good and Iâm okay to look at when Iâm wearing a dress shirt? Is that going to help anyone?â
Iâm doing everything I can to keep my mouth from dropping open and falling on the damn ground.
I want to grab his hand and drag him out of the campground and have my way with him, or is that this baby bit of alcohol talking?
âLook, if you meet enough pretty people and discover theyâre only pretty on the outside, it doesnât take long to learn none of that shit matters. Not that I donât appreciate a beautiful woman because I doâyouâre gorgeousââ
My stomach flutters.
ââbut beauty doesnât make someone faithful. Or a loyal friend. Or a good mother.â His lips purse; he resembles an old woman whoâs tasted a lemon. âSo Iâm tall, big whoop and sure, I have big muscles.
