CHAPTER 7

Juliet

“For pity’s sake, Davis—cut the false modesty act.”

“False modesty? I’m as humble as they come.”

Obviously I don’t believe him; men as good-looking as Davis couldn’t possibly be modest, could they? I’ve certainly never met a man who was even half this attractive who wasn’t an arrogant prick.

Could Davis possess all the qualities of the perfect man as if he were created especially for me and dropped down in the middle of the woods?

Funny, kind, giving.

Tall, dark, handsome.

Stronger than strong.

Burly, even.

Even his five o’clock shadow is doing it for me in a big way and I normally don’t go for stubble on a man; usually love a freshly shaved jawline given that I’m anti-beard burn.

Ha!

Dream on, Juliet.

I have an idea. “How about you describe yourself to me instead.”

His eyes dart to Thad and Mia, who have long given up on us as entertainment for the evening. In fact, I can hear them whispering about sneaking off, wondering if I’ll be fine here with Davis, so they can spend their last night screwing their brains out buck naked in the woods as God intended.

Oy vey.

“You want me to tell you what I’ve got going on here?” He gestures up and down his own body, beer bottle in his large, strong hand.

“Sure. Go for it.”

He’s quiet a few moments as he gathers his thoughts. “Alright, well. Let’s see…who am I, who am I…” His head tilts back, resting on the back of the chair as he gazes up at the sky, avoiding direct eye contact. “Okay, If I were to build a profile on a dating site, this is what I might say to describe myself.”

I wait.

“Tall, hardworking man who values family. Good communicator. Honest.” Davis pauses again to think, finally turning his face to look at me. “I live with intention.”

“You live with intention? What does that even mean?”

“Yes, I mean what I do, and do what I say I’m going to do. I don’t talk just to hear the sound of my own voice. Conflict isn’t necessary and can be avoided. I…” He clears his throat. “When I say and do things, they are for a purpose. I’m trying to make the world a better place. So what if my face cleans up good and I’m okay to look at when I’m wearing a dress shirt? Is that going to help anyone?”

I’m doing everything I can to keep my mouth from dropping open and falling on the damn ground.

I want to grab his hand and drag him out of the campground and have my way with him, or is that this baby bit of alcohol talking?

“Look, if you meet enough pretty people and discover they’re only pretty on the outside, it doesn’t take long to learn none of that shit matters. Not that I don’t appreciate a beautiful woman because I do—you’re gorgeous—”

My stomach flutters.

“—but beauty doesn’t make someone faithful. Or a loyal friend. Or a good mother.” His lips purse; he resembles an old woman who’s tasted a lemon. “So I’m tall, big whoop and sure, I have big muscles.
